Why EMC needs to move upstream

Most manufacturers still treat electromagnetic compatibility as a final hurdle at the end of development. When a product fails, teams face troubleshooting, redesign, new prototypes and another round of testing, often after launch dates are already set.

Moving EMC upstream means identifying requirements and risks before designs are locked in. Formal testing stays essential, but it becomes confirmation that the engineering process worked instead of the place where problems are found. This whitepaper shows engineering and product leaders how to make that shift and build the business case for it.

  • 80%of companies experienced product delays caused by EMC
  • 70%of products failed EMC testing on the first attempt
  • 50%reported annual revenue losses of more than €100,000 from EMC-related issues

What's inside the whitepaper

Practical, engineering-led guidance you can use to make EMC more predictable on your next project.

  1. The limits of test-fix-retest

Why treating EMC as a late-stage hurdle creates risk you can no longer absorb.

  2. Four market realities raising the stakes

Faster development cycles, rising product complexity, a shortage of EMC expertise and evolving requirements.

  3. The EU regulatory timeline, 2016 to 2027

How the EMC Directive, RED, cybersecurity rules, the Cyber Resilience Act and the common charger now overlap.

  4. The hidden costs of reactive EMC

A cost model from visible test costs to delays, supply-chain disruption and lost opportunities.

  5. Hot-patching vs. overengineering

Two costly responses to EMC uncertainty and the problem they share.

  6. A six-step proactive EMC framework

From early requirements and design reviews to pre-compliance testing and knowledge capture.

What is this whitepaper about?

It explains why the traditional test-fix-retest approach to EMC is becoming more costly and how manufacturers can build EMC into product development from the start. It covers the market and regulatory changes behind this shift, the full cost of late EMC failures and a six-step framework for proactive EMC.

What is EMC?

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) means an electronic product can operate reliably in its electromagnetic environment without disturbing other devices and without being unduly affected by electromagnetic disturbances itself. EMC has two sides: emissions (don't disturb others) and immunity (don't be disturbed). Products must also meet the EMC requirements for their product category and target markets.

Who should download it?

Hardware engineers, R&D and engineering managers, product managers, compliance leads, CTOs, CEOs and VPs of engineering at companies developing electronic products, including industrial, medical, automotive and connected consumer devices.

Does it replace EMC testing or expert consulting?

No. Formal compliance testing remains essential. The whitepaper shows how to make testing a confirmation of a well-managed process rather than the place where problems are discovered, and where specialist EMC expertise has the greatest impact.

What standards and regulations does it reference?

The EMC Directive (2014/30/EU), the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU), the EN 18031 cybersecurity standards, the Cyber Resilience Act and the EU common-charger requirement. It also gives an overview of key markets, including FCC Part 15 in the US, UKCA, CCC in China, VCCI in Japan, KC in South Korea, ISED in Canada and RCM in Australia and New Zealand.
